Couples Therapy and Addiction

Addiction can deeply impact intimacy, trust, communication, and emotional safety within a relationship.

Couples may become caught in cycles of secrecy, fear, resentment, monitoring, withdrawal, conflict, or repeated attempts to regain control.

Couples therapy provides space to address the impact addiction has had on both partners while working toward clearer communication, healthier boundaries, increased accountability, and greater understanding of the patterns that have developed within the relationship.

Family Therapy for Addiction

Family therapy can be an essential part of addiction treatment.

Loved ones often need support understanding the difference between helping and enabling, setting effective boundaries, responding to relapse, communicating without escalating conflict, and managing the fear and uncertainty that often accompany addiction.

Family therapy is not about blaming family members or suggesting that they caused the addiction. Rather, it is an opportunity to understand how the entire system has adapted to addiction and identify patterns that may need to change in order to support healthier relationships and recovery.

Group Therapy for Addiction

Group therapy can provide something individual treatment cannot always offer: the experience of being understood by others who have lived through similar struggles.

A thoughtful group environment can help reduce shame and isolation while offering accountability, connection, perspective, and opportunities to practice healthier ways of relating to others.

Treating the Whole System

My approach to addiction treatment is relational, trauma-informed, and systems-oriented.

I integrate cognitive behavioral interventions, Somatic Experiencing, attachment-based work, mindfulness, and family systems principles depending on the needs of the individual or family.

Addiction is rarely just about the substance itself. Recovery often involves understanding what the substance has been doing for a person, addressing the emotional and relational patterns surrounding it, and helping both the individual and the people who love them move out of cycles that are no longer working.

I provide addiction and substance use therapy in Newport Beach for individuals, couples, and families, with telehealth services also available throughout California.

I specialize in providing individual, group, couples, and family therapy for those impacted by addiction and substance use.

I have worked in the field of addiction treatment since 2011, with the majority of my clinical experience taking place over 12 years at Ocean Recovery. During that time, I worked extensively with individuals and families navigating substance use disorders, relapse, recovery, trauma, eating disorders, co-occurring mental health concerns, and the complicated relational dynamics that often develop around addiction.

Addiction does not just affect the individual using substances. It can take hold of an entire family system.

Loved ones are often pulled into the cycle in ways that can feel just as consuming. Partners, parents, siblings, and other family members may find themselves monitoring, rescuing, confronting, avoiding, accommodating, setting limits, backing away from those limits, and constantly trying to determine the “right” thing to do.

Over time, addiction can reshape relationships, communication, trust, boundaries, and family roles.

Because of this, I believe effective addiction treatment often requires more than individual therapy alone.
